Enrollment and teachers

  • State count: 604 students on the 2024-25 Alabama state report card, down from 655 a year earlier. The school’s website puts the current figure at 694.
  • Federal count: 705 students in the 2023-24 school year, with 47 full-time-equivalent teachers, according to the NCES directory. That is about 15 students per teacher.

The counts are taken at different times and by different rules, so they do not match. The school’s profile says two pre-K classrooms serve 36 children.

The arts program

The school calls itself one of the district’s three specialty schools. Students may focus on dance, theater, vocal and instrumental music, and visual art, according to its arts page. Its school profile says children in kindergarten through third grade get regular lessons in all four art forms, fourth and fifth graders begin to focus on one, and middle school students study their art form in depth alongside the core curriculum.

State report card

Alabama grades every public school from A to F each year. The grade comes from a 100-point score built from students’ achievement and growth on state tests in English language arts and math, chronic absenteeism (the share of students who missed 18 or more days) and progress in English language proficiency, according to the Alabama State Department of Education’s report card rules.

2024-25 grade: B, 86 points, up from a B and 82 points on the 2023-24 card. That matches the score for Tuscaloosa City Schools as a whole, a B with 86 points.

Indicator 2023-24 2024-25
Academic achievement (ELA and math tests) 59.6 65.89
Academic growth 100 100
Chronic absenteeism (lower is better) 13.22% 5.09%

TASPA’s full report card, with results by student group, teachers and spending, is on the state’s report card site. The card lists it as a schoolwide Title I school.

Attendance zone and admission

Check an address with the district’s zoning map: type the address, click the blue box on it and the map shows the elementary, middle and high school zones. Zones do not follow the city limits.

In the district’s feeder patterns, the Northridge zone’s elementary schools are TASPA, Verner and Rock Quarry, and they feed Northridge Middle and then Northridge High. The district says TASPA’s grades 6 to 8 are by application only, serve students citywide and are not part of the feeder pattern.

The district’s specialty schools page says the admissions window for 2026-27 is closed; that year’s application closed Jan. 30, 2026. After applications are processed, the school contacts students to schedule auditions, according to its arts page, which lists what each area asks for (art students bring a portfolio of five finished works, for example).
