Where to take a dog in Tuscaloosa: the Will May Dog Park, the leashed Riverwalk and city parks, pet events on the Tinsel Trail, and where dogs are not allowed.

Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. Facts come from the City of Tuscaloosa’s park venue pages, the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority’s dog parks page and each organizer’s own page, linked below. Restaurants and bars are listed only when their own website says dogs are welcome.

Tuscaloosa is easy with a dog if you stay on the Riverwalk and the city’s leashed parks. There is one fenced dog park, the Will May Dog Park at Sokol Park South, run by the county parks authority (PARA). The city lists seven of its parks and trails as pet friendly with a leash required.

Leash rules

The city’s park pages require a leash in every pet-friendly park, and event organizers on city property repeat it: the Tinsel Trail’s pet night says “leash and vaccination ordinances apply.” The full rules on animals inside the city limits are in the City of Tuscaloosa’s Code of Ordinances. Northport and unincorporated Tuscaloosa County have their own rules. Clean up after your dog.

Dog-friendly events

  • Pet Palooza on the Tinsel Trail, Sunday, Dec. 6, 2026, 3 to 5 p.m., Government Plaza: free Santa photos with pets (Tinsel Trail).
  • Pet Eggstravaganza on the Northport Bunny Trail, spring 2027, date to be announced: pet photos with the Easter Bunny, a treat station and pet vendors (Bunny Trail).
  • Live at the Plaza, Friday evenings in May and June: the city calls its free concert series “family (and pet) friendly” (city page).

Where dogs cannot go

  • PARA’s splash pad: no animals at the Harrison Taylor Splash Pad in Palmore Park, according to its rules.
  • Lake Lurleen State Park’s beach: pets are not allowed on the beach, beach pavilion, parking lot, playground or surrounding areas (Alabama State Parks). The park’s trails are covered on our trails guide.

Patios and stores

We list a restaurant patio, brewery or store here only when its own website says dogs are welcome. As of Oct. 17, 2026, we had not confirmed one; send a link through our contact page.
